MANCHESTER, England (AP)—Germany general manager Oliver Bierhoff says his team will be able to challenge defending champion Spain at next year’s European Championship because it will be reaching its peak while the World Cup champions could possibly be tired after a long club season.
Germany reached the semifinals at last year’s World Cup before losing to Spain.
Bierhoff says his players “now are better technically educated … physically much better” than they were a few years ago.
And while acknowledging that Spain is the best team in the world, the former Germany striker says “hopefully perhaps in another year the players will be having success with Barcelona and other teams and getting a little bit tired, a little bit older.”
