Juan Mata’s sending off for Manchester United made big news on the back pages of the English press this Monday, with headlines like the Daily Mail’s “Stupid Boy”. The Spanish footballer was sent off in the first half of the game against West Brom after he was shown two yellow cards in the space of just three minutes.

And to compound matters United went on to lose the game.

Mata saw the first yellow after 23 minutes for diving in to block a free kick taken by his former teammate Darren Fletcher, and the second on 26 minutes for an uncompromising late challenge on Fletcher.

After the game, Louis van Gaal did his best to explain Mata’s sending off: “The first was a stupid yellow card. You know it is a yellow card in advance. When you have a yellow card you have to take care of that. The referee can always give another yellow card then and then it is a red card”.
